My condolences to Diana and your family. I worked with John in the Kansas Division of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and he was sure a nice and caring person, who took the time to listen and give you feedback. Whether it was right and or wrong, he supported you in your decision.
I always kidded John about riding a "Honda" as I am a Harley rider! I told him that he needed to upgrade to a "Hawg" and he would just laugh and say I needed to buy a Honda. Though we never rode together, we talked about different rides we had been on.
John will be missed by all, but will be remembered in our thoughts!
From one service member to another, I will have your "6."
Rest-in-Peach my Brother!
Lonnie

Great memories of float trips in the Ozarks! We remember when Ian, with great trepidation, went to talk with John to ask his permission for Jamie to go with him to the country music show where he worked. From there, they were to drive to one of those float trips late at night. John's size and demeanor could be quite intimidating to a 17 year old! John laughed with us after that visit at how nervous Ian was. But, he granted his permission. I know we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when they drove into our campground very early in the morning. We treasure our friendship with all of you.

Kay and I send our condolences to the entire Carkin family. John and I worked together at the US DOT but it is John the husband, father, and grandfather that I am thinking of now. John was a special man, an example of humanity we should all strive for but most of us fall very short of. No kinder, more caring man have I met. So sorry for his loss.

I remember Uncle John being a mountain of a man.....and that’s how I’ll always remember him. A great husband, dad, uncle and man. My wife Laura and I send our love and prayers to Aunt Diana, Jill, Jason, Jaime, Brett and the rest of the family.

One memory that sticks out to me is from one of Uncle John and Aunt Diana's motorcycle trips, He gave me a ride on the gold wing. As we were getting ready I was sitting behind him with Aunt Diana's helmet on, and my dad realized my shoes were untied. So he bent down and began lacing my shoes. to which I commented to my self out load something like, I can't believe I'm 23 and my dad is still tying my shoes. That's when I found out the helmets were linked with speakers I could hear Uncle John chuckling in my ears. Needless to say it was a fun time.
I also enjoyed our occasional accidental face time phone calls where your phone wasn't working right, :) And texting during baseball games.
I will miss you Uncle John. See you on the other side!
Love Andrew.
