Obituary of Delbert F. Sterling

Delbert F. Sterling, age 85, died in Florida on July 4 following a brief illness. He is survived by one son, (Stuart Sterling - Santa Barbara, CA), two sisters (Janet Moran and Judy Wagner – Greenville, NC), one grandson and a number of nieces and nephews. Delbert was predeceased by his father (Clarence Sterling), his mother (Edith Kohler), and two brothers (David Sterling and Dale Sterling).

 

Born in Darlington, WI, Delbert spent his early and teen years between communities in Wisconsin and in Rockford, Illinois. He graduated from what was then Rockford’s East High School and later attended college in New Mexico. Delbert had a long career with the Bell Telephone System being employed by them in Illinois, California, and finally in the Vermont towns of Rutland, Bennington, and Burlington.

 

Following his retirement from full-time employment in 1990, Delbert first settled in LaBelle, FL. where he pursued his life-long dream of playing golf every day.  To that end, he worked part-time for many years at the area golf courses of Oxbow and Majestic where he also co-managed men’s golf leagues with his friend, Bill Shapter. Delbert spent his last years at his home in Lehigh Acres, FL.

 

No formal funeral services are planned. Those wanting to remember Delbert may wish to make a donation in his name at firsttee.org.  First Tee is a nonprofit organization with the stated goal of improving the lives and social skills of children through golf lessons.
