John Welky

Obituary of John Welky

If his life story was made into a film we would all agree that Disney and Marvel would be hired to do the job. Let’s face it, John Welky loved a good Disney/Marvel movie! And this one would be a great love story with adventure, thrills, great comedy (albeit a bit of sarcasm) a lot of random facts, great friendships, and more love woven in. This wonderful story began on March 16, 1973 and came to a sudden close on April 23, 2021. There were a number of good things John loved; his beautiful wife Rhonda, his equally sweet daughter Natalie, his mother Chinda Harwood, his dad Jack Welky (who preceded John in death) and his brothers and sister: Joey (wife Vonda), Annalisa (Lex Baker and Elise Baker ), Larry, sister in law Tracy Fry (Cody Fry and Christopher Delaney) and his mother-in law, Kristine Petersen who he loved and a very special young lady, Emily Markussen who he cherished as his own. Everyone was family. There was no divide or difference between the sides. To John, family was family. The motorcycles and the John Deere tractors were in a special category of their own. If you know him you understand! Many are surprised when they learn John was a veteran and was in the United States Navy. He was humble about his service and a true patriot proudly serving his country. A fact his daughter Natalie is extremely proud of. John, Rhonda, and Natalie were that unique family that did everything together and supported each other in their endeavors. John loved riding his motorcycle, especially when Natalie would join him for the ride, or when he embarked on the annual camping trip with his buddies. The weekend rides over to visit his mom were some of his favorite trips. Natalie was especially blessed that John was so dedicated to being a father - teaching her how to truly appreciate Mario, Zelda, and other Nintendo mes, a love for Disney movies, supplying the great random facts about virtually anything and everything in life and loving her with his whole heart. Rhonda and John were married in October of 2001 and John was the true love story Rhonda deserved. Anyone who knows them is well aware of that story and the commitment they had to each other, the fairytale romance that survived even the bumps in the road that we all experience. John worked for Dauntless as a crew chief on the flight line. He had the opportunity to work with pilots from all over the country as they fought wildfires. Johnny loved what he did and made a lasting impression on those who were lucky enough to work with him. The friendship part of his movie is one of the best parts. John nailed it when it came to being a friend and everyone he met was considered one. It did not make any difference what time you called him or what the reason for the call was. You would hear the “whatsssss upppp” and be lifted by the excitement he had just from hearing from you! It is a testament to how John lived his life- the friends and the outpouring of love. A life lived with exuberance, faith in God, undying love for family and friends. We will miss you Johnny Ponny.
