In loving memory of
CAROL ELAINE BENSON
September 6, 1956 – September 9, 2021
Carol Elaine Benson, 65, of Fort Myers, Florida, peacefully passed in her sleep at home on the morning of September 9, 2021, after her courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Despite her daily struggles with ALS, her positivity and joy continued to radiate and her body is now restored as she walks the streets of Heaven with her Lord.
Carol was born September 6, 1956, in Fort Myers, Florida to the late Gladys "Cleo" and Albert Miller. She married Rodney Eric Benson on June 26, 1976 and remained in Fort Myers near family and friends. Carol worked over 20 years at Tri-County Community Bank (later Florida Community Bank), until retiring in the late ‘90s to homeschool her children. Over the 14 years of teaching her children, she continued to volunteer in numerous homeschool and children's ministries (especially Christian Home Educators of Southwest Florida), dedicating her time and care to guiding others through their journey with home educating.
At her passing, she was the longest continual member of Riverside Church, where she began as a child and continued on to teaching adult Sunday school classes, and for 10 years was the co-leader of the Prime Time Bible Study Class. In her younger years, she could be found interpretative signing for hearing-impaired members of the church. Later, she spent nearly 15 years helping in the children’s ministry, including the church's Awana program. Over her life, she continued to serve in children’s ministry, caring for elderly members of the church who had no family, after-school programs in public schools, and many more ways within and beyond the church doors. It is evident that she generously spent her life caring for and loving on those around her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Rodney Benson, their two children and their spouses Erica (Dustin) Peterson, Emily (Elliot) Golden; her four siblings and their spouses Raymond (Kathy) Harney, Marilyn (David) Hoiles, Nathan (Francine) Miller, and Janet (Dominic) Puglisi, three grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed and loved by all.
There will be a memorial service at Riverside Church, 8660 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, Florida 33912, on a date later to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Riverside Church, 8660 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, Florida 33912.
